Winter Nights
by Darius Jager
Never do as lovers do
The simple life undone
Lost in hopes, defied in dreams
A foolish want succumbs
And rest in souls is hard to find
When tainted truths revealed
Imagine paradise as something true
When life its pleasure steals
I dreamt one night of starlight beauty
Down by the riverbed
And woke in arms of sweet caress
The eyes of daylight bled
I dreamt of happiness in sacred night
Which held us both so dear
In timeless hours spent in awe
Not knowing what to feel
Passing by in haltered breath
The common rules obeyed
To think with minds and cautious tones
Leaves fantasy betrayed
To leave it all without belief
Of life as what we make
Now and forever we will sit
And take our harsh mistakes
“So what of now?” the river speaks
“What will become of you?”
I turn and laugh to hide my grief
But yet she sees me through
I did not know why I did speak
But still my heart did say
“My sweet memories of winter nights
will keep us here today.”
