What a Day

by Gareth Edel

Today is a day I am sadly unable to smile.
Not to say I am sad.
I am simply sadly unable to smile.
A telephone rings and a friend far away has called to say hello.
I speak in a voice that is sunny.
Lips turned down at the corners.
Unable to remove the angle I simply draw on my cigarette.

I watch my cat turn over in the sun,
Stretching and extending claws.
And I wonder why his lips,
cat lips are thin,
Aren't turned up or down at the corner.
If he is unable to smile?

I ate a tomato sandwich for dinner, and a salad.
Not because of a moral or otherwise associated ideal,
Simply because it is the first thing that comes to mind.
While I put away the mayonnaise, I notice the bottle of Canadian chilling.
I decide television shall be my drunk tonight.
After some time watching I do not notice I am still not smiling.
