Daydream
by Gareth Edel
The house of cards fell and I awoke.
There was no starting over,
Not to achieve the same result, it could never be the same.
The cards would never be in the same places.
Never as perfectly arranged,
Never without sorting and starting over,
Never in this breeze.
Sitting under the tree, I knew the cards could be blown away.
I looked at the Queen of hearts, and she was different.
I had had my eyes closed, and seen a different portrait.
From a different card game.
I didn't see the card I held,
I had been hoping for a better hand.
I was breathing in a day dream and it crumbled.
Never should have started a house of cards in a breeze.
You need a calm start for building.
Watching a sand castle wash away is beautiful to me,
You can see it change back to a blank, slowly.
There is none of the wreckage that is left behind when a house of cards falls.
