Field Day

by Julio

Intro by Editor, Tyler Carey - During the weeks leading up to Field Day, there was a daily update by Julio. He was psyched for the festival. Who wouldn't be? Beck, Radiohead, the Beasties... When the fest was canceled, I thought we'd have to put Julio on round-the-clock watch. When it was resurrected at Giants (Jets?) Stadium, he hoofed right over to catch the show, dig the tunes, snap some pics, and whip up a quickie review. He's the man.

Just got back from Field day and here's the report:

It fucking rained hard all day and by the time Radiohead came on it stopped. It was a bit dissapointing since Beck slipped and fell backstage and had to be taken to a local hospital. The Beastie Boys were great though, even though their set was a bit off, mainly because they didn't have a set list and were deciding what songs to do on the spot. Mix Master Mike was on fire and mixed different versions of almost every single Beastie's classic. They played a couple of new tracks and the new stuff sounds tight. He even mixed a Punjabi MC song and Mike D, MC A and Ad Rock kept telling Mix Master Mike to start over because they kept messing up the song. The song would kick in and they just didn't know were to jump in and start singing the song. Ad Rock was saying to Mix Master Mike, "Where does the beat drop on that song?". If you haven't heard this song it's pretty catchy and uses sitars and tablas in the beginning then the beat drops when the Knight Rider Theme kicks in. The Beasties finally decided to give up on trying to sing whatever song they were gonna do since they admitted not remembering the song.

Radiohead stole the show. What an incredible show! There's nothing much I can say besides, "Go and see them and you'll understand". I also caught Elliot Smith on the second stage in the middle of a huge downpour. I got some good pictures so check them out.
