Williamsburg Records - A New Perspective
by Darius Jager
Manhattan, NY - June 8, 2005 -- Gad Romann has always had the ability to turn his passions into his bread and butter. Writing songs since age seven, many starting as poetry, Gad holds a large collection of works with topics ranging from the power of now to women's autonomy. Currently, he is writing at a two song per week pace and shows no signs of stopping. With a fountain of creative energy at his fingertips, it seems like there is only one things left for him to do. Why starting a record label of course!
Williamsburg Records is the name of this music house and believe it or not, Gad Romann has a pretty clear picture as to what this newest of grass roots labels will produce; music that is positive, progressive, and lean. "Punk has always lended itself to knew ideas" says Gad who loves the big thinkers and transformers of our time. The name of this label is dedicated to the amazing talents that come out of Williamsburg, the melting pot of Brooklyn. Nearly every musician that has recorded with Gad has been a product of Williamsburg.
Aside from great talent and a bright new attitude, Williamsburg Records will offer something that no other label, to my recollection, has succeeded with in the past. They will produce singles and that's it!
The music industry is a funny business. Thousands of record labels grab at the chance to sign on any one of a million new artists in the hopes of finding the next big thing to blow up on the scene. Then after a hundred bands or so are hung to dry, they may find that one talent to put their faces on the map. Gad thinks this is where economy and talent should meet. "You have three minutes, do the best that you can do," Gad says while telling me about his ideas. His plan to confine Williamsburg Records to singles and singles only is a projected new leap for quality over quantity.
Keeping a watchful eye over the ever-changing selling trends in the biz, Gad Romann has seized hold of a new trend in single CD sales. With the digital age solidifying into a now profitable market, downloading has transformed from the biggest thorn in the music business' side to its newest and biggest profit sector. The portability of singles with the advent of the iPod has never been easier and with it, the concept of digital downloads is no longer foreign.
To grab a hold of any of the singles put out by Williamsburg Records, all you need to do is simply go to the website, click on songs, and pick from any tune that you dig in their archive. To hear a sampling of what Williamsburg Records has to offer, the all-powerful Myspace gods have provided the answer to that one!
I, for one, am anxious to hear what comes out of this think tank. Collaborations have a special place in my heart and giving multiple artists a place to shine is my kind of thing. Best of luck to you Williamsburg Records and we will see you on the net!
