Summer Hymns
Value Series Vol. 1: Fool's Gold
Misra, 2004
by Dr. Christian Carey
Summer Hymns combine seventies-styled folk pop with alt country sensibilities on their latest Misra release. This is an unassuming recording, gentle and lyrical - you may not recall every hook after hearing it the first couple of times, but its pervasive sonic warmth is pleasantly memorable. Still, certain songs do stand out; "Behind that Locked Door" is a lilting, pedal steel-filled alt-country charmer, whereas "It Takes Two" is a warbling indie ballad with a melancholy vocal chorus. "Pharmon" on the other hand, has a pleasingly off-kilter loping rockabilly groove, on top of which are placed deadpan vocals and an elaborately layered instrumental coda. Only twenty-eight minutes long, this EP may leave you wanting more when it stops spinning.
