Ken Ueno's European Travelogue '03
6 - Freiburg-Amsterdam It
is a seven-hour trip to Amsterdam.
Stops at Bonn, Cologne, Dusseldorf, as well at towns of which I have
never heard of before – life must happen in those places too. Perhaps even important battles had been
fought there too. My lack of knowledge
relegates these places into obscurity.
Even now, having ridden in a train which passed through them, my refusal
to allocate space in my memory to these places undoes their existence. Trains
stop longer at bigger towns. Except at
the little town of Emmerich. The train
stays here longer than in Cologne. Seven
hours of indeterminable expanse of green after another. Finally, a windmill. We must be in the Netherlands now. More consecutive vowels in signs too.
