A Grand Day Out #2, Hoboes at the Beach

Text by Tyler Carey, Photos by Julio

On Saturday, August 23rd, a bunch of the Great Hoboes gathered for a day of sun and surf out in Long Beach, Long Island. Long Beach is a misunderstood lil' ol' beach community that is equal parts gentrification and hobo. Folks bringing their gourmet groceries back to seaside sky rise beach apartments walk past whisky guzzling welfare hotel residents sitting on their stoops. It's a nifty arrangement that's been going on for decades.

Hoboes Tyler Carey, Jacob Chabot, Wade Stuckwisch, and fellow travelers Gus Andrews, Travis and Michelle Dale, Mike Marino, Marlene Schweikert, Julio, and his compatriots Suzanne, Bryan, and Ruth, all nestled into the sand for some sun before multiple dips in the unseasonably cold weather.

Pictured here are Tyler, Julio's girlfriend (and-soon-to-be-Hobo) Suzanne, and Julio's wacky friends Bryan and Ruth.

No visit to the beach is proper without sand castle making. Gus Andrews quickly proved herself to be the Martha Stewart of sand-castle architecture and engineering. Just back from a honeymoon in Belize, Travis and Michelle proved that they know their way around a coastline, as well. Not to be topped, Hobo artist Jacob Chabot proved that he knew a thing or two about the fine art of granular sculpting.

Hobo presidential candidate Mark Hugo was off at an underground wrestling match with Hobo critic Benni Pierce (think Fight Club meets Cactus Jack). Karl Moore was off at a seminar on avoiding political corruption. Their banner waved on though. Well, actually, it kind of lay on the sand perplexing folks who had no idea who the hell we hoboes were. But the message was out there; something I'm sure Mr. Hugo appreciated.
