Terry, Good Day and the Rapture is Coming
The world is coming to an end. I woke up this morning, having slept with the TV on, to the sound of Good Day Live.... This show, if you aren't familiar with it, is the natural pinnacle of stupid hosted tabloid morning shows. The show is amazing in that the hosts know this and joke about its low quality and lack of serious subject matter. The hosts all are minor celebrities, and the show started in that breeding ground of formless image, Los Angeles. What amazed me and leads me to believe that I should atone, and of course expect the rapture, was the presence of Terry Bradshaw on the show and what he said. Terry Bradshaw for those who don't know, is an Ex-professional football player, turned failed actor, turned show host on some channel, and most recently a member of the phone calls for a dollar bad advertisement that drives us insane every single ad break in all our favorite shows crew.
Terry Bradshaw looked at the camera as I was waking up. He said that men are expected to hide their feelings and that that was a part of our expected gender roles. That was why it was so important for him to go out and educate men on the medical truth about Depression and Anxiety disorders. He proceeded to discuss his own use of Paxil, and of his experience as a depressive, and his experience with other celebrity athletes who have used therapy and anti-depressive drugs, not for athletic gain, but to lead a happier life.
In the middle of the flashback I felt I must be on, seeing a guy who I have never heard speak an intelligent word, speak several. I flipped channels up one and found the view. Which had Richard Chamberlain talking about his gay lover of twenty five years and at one point pantomiming driving in a car. I didn't know he was gay. So I flipped up and saw John Walsh saying forcefully, "I believe in Capital Punishment," and then "People who run Voyeur web sites should be punished to the fullest extent of the law." Which of course they are, but the laws are weak, and to be honest he sounded a little creepy focusing on these things…
So what. Just because you hear a professional jock say that men's gender roles are stifling, the host of a tabloid call it a silly tabloid, and a law enforcement type say he wants to beat everyone, does that mean it is the end of the world? YES! For god sake it would be like the pope saying "Whoops, maybe we should rethink this sex and contraceptive stuff, I mean god is a good guy..." Honesty does not grow over night, I don't know what happened but it drives me nuts...or maybe I already was nuts.
