Chris Stain started writing graffiti in 1984. He started cutting stencils in '98 because he "didn't have the money for screenprinting equipment and wanted to keep working with the aerosol paint...so i used posterboard, razor blades, and spraypaint." He continued about his work, "As time went on, I experimented with different materials such as mylar, exacto knives, and better spraypaint. I cut all of my stencils by hand and seperate the colors by eye, not computer. I work mostly from family photographs & old books on the labor movement. I grew up in a working class family & neighborhood, so I guess somehow I have been affected by that struggle." His work can be viewed at www.chrisstain.com and in the book Stencil Graffiti by Tristan Manco. His future projects include "an art center where the neighborhood kids can have their own studio space, with a gallery & classes for those who are interested in art."
